United Kingdom by region: Census 2021–2022
Every adult (16 or over) in the United Kingdom, region by region in England and nation by nation for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each person is a real combination of traits from the three censuses' public 1% samples (England and Wales 2021, Scotland 2022, Northern Ireland 2021), weighted so every place matches its population by sex and age.

How close these people come to the published figures, and where they fall short.
55,190,347 adults · 233,339 Census records · 12 regions in 4 nations
Built 2026-10-10 · records uk-2021-v1
How close the people land on the Census
Each region's records are weighted until they match its ONS mid-2022 population estimates of adults by sex and age. The figure is the worst region's largest gap on each table, in percentage points.
| Table | Worst region |
|---|---|
| Sex by age | 0.5 |
What keeping fewer records costs
Each region is weighted on all its records, then thinned to at most 20,000 by a systematic draw on their weights, so the template stays small enough to use. The figure is the worst region's largest gap between the kept records and all of them, per table, in percentage points.
| Table | Worst region |

| Sex by age | 0.0 |
A check left out of the fit: health
General health was not used in weighting, so it shows how well the weighted people carry traits nobody fitted. Per region, the share of adults in bad or very bad health lands a median 0.0 points from the census's own figure; 95% of regions within 0.3, the worst 0.3. Scotland has no figure: its census table is published only through the UK Data Service, which scripts cannot reach. Northern Ireland's table starts at age 15.
What drawing a population adds
A population is a sample of these weighted people, so small regions vary from draw to draw. Largest gap per region between the people drawn and the region's records, regions with at least 30 people.

- Public microdata teaching samples, 1% of each census, Open Government Licence: ONS, Census 2021, England and Wales (604,351 people); National Records of Scotland, Scotland's Census 2022 (54,399); NISRA, Census 2021, Northern Ireland (16,894). Adults 16 or over, weighted per place and thinned to at most 20,000 records. Traits are the ones all three samples carry; Northern Ireland's gives only White and other ethnic groups, its household's social grade, and births in the rest of the UK and Ireland as one group (read here as born in the UK). Social grade is given to people 16 to 64, as England and Wales give it.
